Abstract
The Anthropocene is the concept that describes the current situation in which human activity has become a geological force on the planet. While debates continue as to whether the Anthropocene can be described as a new ‘geological epoch’ in geoscientific terms, it can be said without hesitation that the concept has already made a breakthrough in the social and human sciences. Nor has the discipline of law been spared the wave generated by the Anthropocene. In fact, the crises of the Anthropocene, in particular the climate and biodiversity crises, have long been on the radar of public lawyers, if not the Anthropocene as a phenomenon. Thus, it can be argued that public lawyers have been working against the backdrop of the Anthropocene for some time. However, the purpose of this paper, which is an analysis of ‘being a public lawyer in the Anthropocene’, is to go one step further: It aims to motivate the public lawyer to explore the responsibility (if any) of human law in the Anthropocene, not just as a ‘recipient’ of Anthropocene debates, but as an actor in the debate itself. While this inevitably entails considering the question of ‘what the public lawyer should do in the Anthropocene’, the article begins with another question that is not often encouraged to be asked. In this context, the paper will ask public lawyers what they see when looking at ‘their legal toolbox’ in light of the Anthropocene.…
