One of the most critical problems of the days we live, is the climate change and the effects of it, has been discussed in many different disciplines. In order to minimize these effects, international organizations encouraging shipping companies take some steps under the name of “green shipping practices”. A green future in shipping is related to the concept of sustainability. Especially the sulphur content in ship fuels and ballast waters of ships are explained as examples for sustainable shipping. Insurance is among the sustainability principles accepted by the United Nations for various sectors. One of the insurers who become signatory of these principles is a protection and indemnity (P&I) Club. In the light of these developments in shipping and insurance, we examined how the climate change may affect (a) insurance law in general, (b) P&I insurance and (c) hull and machinery (H&M) insurance.…
